Health and Fitness – A need at BITS PILANI

A student’s health is important for the efficient functioning of his body and mind. Health and Fitness of a living being comes solely from his lifestyle i.e. the kind of food he eats , exercise etc.

Today in this fast paced life people have totally lost their sense of how to keep a healthy body. They are gaining weight(obesity) ,  suffering with numerous diseases like diabetes, asthma, cardiovascular (you name it !), and the major thing is, this has started happening  from a young age.

College is a great place to learn, grow and explore , and certainly when students leave college they should certainly learn the way of life i.e. how to be healthy and fit.

Living in Pilani campus for 5 years, it certainly became my second home and a great place where  I have completely changed mentally and physically( 😉 ). This blog gonna be all about what I observed in these 5 years should change and be implemented A.S.A.P for the betterment of the kind of individuals pilani campus is producing.

 

Current State of Food consumption

There are 7 places in Pilani campus where you can eat –

  1. ANC(all night canteen)
  2. Looters
  3. Food King
  4. cannaught place
  5. mess/mess extras 😀
  6. Institute canteen
  7. numerous reddi’s

Ok, so that looks like a huge number of places where you can eat healthy food, oh wait !! , healthy? are you sure?

First of all let me define what is an healthy food!

  • healthy food  is a kind of food that provides your body with essential macro nutrients, micro nutrients, fluid and adequate calories. This kind of food makes you beautiful  inside and outside, you rarely suffer from any disease (believe me on this) .
  • If you talk about “the traditional indian way of  eating” as in the ayurvedic way then it mostly consists of whole grains, dry fruits, fruits, vegetables.
  • This type of food doesn’t contain refined wheat flour(maida) , bad oils, meat, refined sugar and the list goes on!

Now let’s analyse the food we are getting in various eating places  listed-

 

MeSS – the sugar factory

Mess is a crucial part of a students life, It is designed so that students have their meal at proper time. If you see the food available, I would mark it as a rich and healthy diet. The food comprises of generally –

  • Roti(fibre, protein)
  • pulses(protein)
  • Curd(calcium,protein)
  • Salad(multivitamins)
  • Rice(energy)

This is a pretty good diet in my opinion , but, apart from this you have an option of mess extras – the sugar factory. Mess extras generally comprises of –

  • Colddrinks
  • Packed Juices
  • Biscuits
  • Ice-creams
  • Chips 

or if I have to express what Mess extras really are , then –

  • Bad Fats(Trans Fats)
  • High Sugar
  • Bad oils
  • High sodium
  • High bad cholestrol

So I mean something is going terribly wrong here, either BITS Pilani doesn’t really know what it is offering to its student , or they may know, but who gives a shit about someone’s health .

And also each and every day there is also a lot of wastage of food, here is a pic demonstrating food wastage on a particular day in shankar mess –

So why is the food been wasted ?

Because people have lost their sense of what to eat. When India was called “Sindhu” people really had a better sense of what they are putting in their body, but now “most” of the people’s vision is been blurred by ad-agency , the 2 minute noodles concept, drinking cold drink instead of water when you are thirsty, there are so many things  going wrong just because of unhealthy marketing.

If these ad agencies just show  what Maggi  really does to your body no one will ever desire eating that shit.

Also here comes the role of college education , If we are taught the 2 w’s like

  • what is bad
  • why is bad

for everything we put in our body, we are gonna get better and better as an individual.

Ok so these 3 idiots are working on the same vision –

How to mess with people’s health?

yeah really! this is what they are doing. If I have to choose between them  I will go for FOOD KING because they have nice dosas and uthappam that I can feed on 😀 . If we leave south indian there is nothing really to say because all of it is just trash.

I don’t know why BITS PILANI is even allowing them to run , here is an image of all the bad fats, high cholestrol food that is been sold –

Institute Canteen

This I will regard as one of the safest place to eat in Pilani. Apart from all the oily stuff that they have ,  some of the things I really found quite healthy –

  • Uthappam
  • Buttermilk
  • Dosa
  • Aloo Paratha(less oily) + Dahi

Conclusion

There is a lot going on at BITS nowadays , the entire fee hike protest and all, but I think in this current age of processed food this is something that should also be taken into consideration not only in BITS but in every college.

  1. I totally agree with this . I have complained a lot to my family that there is not even a single place where we can have healthy food apart from mess. The whole college serves you food which is dipped in oil and rich in artificial sugars. I am scared whenever i see paranthas being made at ANC as they literalky contain ghee and nothing else. This post made me happy as there is someone whi has taken an initiative towards the most unhealthy food served on campus. Thanks

While I agree with most of the points I would just like to point out that you can’t classify only the ayurvedic way of eating as healthy as this was thousand years before now and the platter of these people was about 10% of what it is now for you. One more point you mentioned meat as unhealthy going by that point about almost most of the western countries should be screwed as its a major part of their diet.

    1. Lol, yoga is also thousands years old but it doesn’t mean its ineffective. This particular land that now we call “India” had been birthplace of great gurus , they devoted their entire life in studying the body and mind, yoga and Ayurveda is a byproduct of that study.
      Just these past 300-400 years have been particularly bad as lot of people have conquered this land and more of westernized it . but its really good yoga has again made a comeback because of people like ramdev and sadhguru.

  3. Looters is the worst amongst the 3 idiots, went there when fk/anc were closed during winters and fell sick due to the food, the place is literally “looting” students’ health and money. 😛
